How to read a QR code from an image
To read a QR code from an image you only need the picture itself — no camera, no app. Drop it in, and the decoded content appears below the tool.
- 01
Drop or paste
Drop the image into the tool above, paste it with Ctrl+V, or tap to pick one from your gallery.
- 02
Read the content
The exact text, link, or other payload encoded in the code appears below the tool.
- 03
Copy or open deliberately
Copy it, or — if it is a link — open it when you choose to. Nothing opens on its own: you stay in control of what loads.
What a QR code can contain
A QR code is just text with packaging. Most hold a URL, but the same square can carry plain text, a phone number, a WiFi login, a contact card, or a location. Whatever is inside, this tool shows it to you as-is — and if it is a link, the domain is highlighted so you can see where it really goes before you tap.
The image won’t read?
If you tried to read a QR code from an image and the decoder comes back empty, the code is likely blurry, low-resolution, or physically damaged — the three most common reasons a QR code stops reading. That is a different problem, and there is a different tool for it: the repair tool runs a series of image-processing passes, verifies the recovered content against the code’s own error correction, and rebuilds a clean, scannable copy. It also runs entirely in your browser.
Nothing is uploaded
This page has no upload step. The image you drop is decoded by your own browser and never leaves your device — the same promise the repair tool makes. There is no account, no limit, and no copy of your image on any server.
Frequently asked questions
How do I read a QR code from a screenshot?
Save or copy the screenshot, then drop it into the tool above (or paste it directly with Ctrl+V). The decoder reads the code from the image — no camera involved.
Can I read a QR code without scanning it with a camera?
Yes — you can read a QR code from an image with no camera involved. Scanning is just one way to feed a QR code decoder an image; this page feeds it a file instead — useful when the code is on your computer screen, in a chat message, or on paper you’ve photographed, and pointing your phone at a screen often fails.
Why won’t my QR code read?
Usually one of three things: the image is too blurry or too small, the code is creased or partially covered, or the quiet zone — the empty margin around the pattern — has been cropped or filled in. A damaged code is often still recoverable: try the repair tool.
Is it safe to read QR codes online?
Reading is the safe half of QR codes — the risk is in what happens next. This tool decodes on your device, never opens a link automatically, and highlights the domain so you can check a link before using it. Treat any QR payload the way you’d treat a link from a stranger.
Does this work with barcodes?
No — this tool reads QR codes (and Micro QR is not supported either). Product barcodes like EAN or UPC are a different symbology with a different decoder.
